Avowed is a highly anticipated open-world action RPG developed for the
Xbox Series X and S by Obsidian Entertainment. The game is set in the
same universe as the Pillars of Eternity games. Even though it was
announced all the way back in 2020, official updates have been scarce.
However, leaks and rumors have given us some insights into what we can
expect from Avowed. So, without further ado, here are the 5 things you
should know about Avowed.
1. Story
The Pillars of Eternity verse is rich with fascinating stories and
lore. In fact, Pillars of Eternity and its follow-up, are widely
regarded as among the best top-down RPGs ever made. While Avowed’s
gameplay looks more similar to Skyrim, it does boast the same lore
that made this franchise a roaring success. In Avowed, you take the
role of a Watcher, a special individual with the power to interact
with souls. In your adventure, you’ll uncover the mysteries of Eora
and confront an ancient malevolent force threatening to plunge the
land into darkness.
The backstory of the Pillars of Eternity games provides the foundation
for Avowed’s narrative. In the original Pillars of Eternity, players
explored the nation of Dyrwood, a land haunted by a legacy of war and
suffering. The discovery of a dangerous ritual known as “The
Hollowborn Crisis” revealed a shocking truth—the cycle of souls in
Eora had been disrupted, leading to children being born without souls
and causing societal chaos.
The sequel, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, took players to the
Deadfire Archipelago, a region brimming with secrets and treasure.
Continuing the tale of the Watcher, players sought to uncover the
mystery behind a resurrected god’s plans and prevent an impending
catastrophe. Eora is a polytheistic world with a diverse pantheon of
deities. These gods are often associated with various aspects of life,
and their worship and influence impact the lives of mortals in
significant ways. The gods will play a crucial role once again in
Avowed. Of course, I’m only scratching the surface of the lore and
story of Pillars of Eternity. If you’re interested in an in-depth lore
video, do let us know in the comments.
Avowed’s storyline is likely set during a time when the events from
the previous Pillars of Eternity games have left a lasting impact.
Although many have speculated that it will be a prequel due to its
seemingly medieval setting. In the reveal trailer, a flag was visible,
possibly linked to the deity Woedica, the goddess of justice and
oaths, who shaped the land of Eora in Pillars of Eternity. Reddit
users deciphered runes in a scene showing a character wielding a sword
and magic, revealing the word “Oathbinder,” another name for Woedica.
Clearly, Woedica has been a central figure in the Pillars of Eternity
universe, and it seems Avowed will be no different. Unfortunately, we
barely know anything about Avowed’s story, so all we can do is
speculate.
2. Open-World
The game is confirmed to be set in an open-world
environment, unlike the Pillars of Eternity games. It’s been widely
compared to The Elder Scrolls. This was Obsidian Entertainment’s
intention, but the game has apparently made a small departure from The
Elder Scroll’s sandbox-style gameplay in favor of a more traditional
RPG delivery. As the Watcher, you’ll be exploring the… rather small
world of Eora. That’s right, the developers have confirmed that
Avowed’s open world won’t be quite as large as Skyrim’s, which by
today’s standards, is kind of average in size. Regardless, a large
open world doesn’t necessarily make a good open world. They must have
a good reason for keeping it more confined. So far, the leaks have
revealed that Avowed will feature two major cities along with various
smaller settlements. Also, Avowed features real-time weather, which is
a big upside.
3. Gameplay
Leaks suggest that Avowed will have a strong emphasis on its magic and
physics system. The leaked trailer and screenshots showcase impressive
magical abilities, hinting at dynamic and engaging gameplay.
Additionally, Avowed is expected to include a combat class system and
dual-wielding mechanics. Players will have the freedom to choose their
playstyle and wield a combination of weapons and spells. Avowed has
also been reported to have a very advanced character-creation tool.
4. Mod Support
Taking another page from Bethesda, Avowed will also feature mod
support. Great news for all PC gamers. After all, the modding
community is what has kept Skyrim alive for so long, and it seems
Obsidian wants to replicate Bethesda’s success.
5. Release Date
While the official release date remains a mystery,
speculations point to a potential launch in late 2024. This timeframe
would allow Avowed to stand out on its own, avoiding a direct clash
with other major titles like Starfield from Bethesda.
