Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 comes as a surprise sequel just 2 years after its predecessor. The developers, Ludosity, have clearly aimed for improvement, armed with more resources and time. This sequel clearly intends to address the obvious shortcomings of the first game and deliver a more refined experience. And thankfully, the announcement trailer and EVO gameplay showcase have given us a glimpse of what to expect. It’s worth noting that character showcases began releasing while this analysis was underway.
But for now, let’s focus on the movesets for characters like SpongeBob, who reveal how veteran movesets can change, as well as the newcomers. Also, while some potential roster leaks are circulating, I’ll avoid discussing them here to respect those who prefer not to be spoiled. Here are the 5 things you should know about Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2.
Combat and Visual Overhaul
The sequel’s announcement trailer highlights several updates, with the most apparent being the aesthetic overhaul. Visual improvements aside, a majority of the original Nick Brawl roster makes a return, as seen in the trailer. While only a handful of characters haven’t appeared yet, it’s safe to assume that most veterans will make a comeback, though there might be a few cuts. For example, character movesets have seen substantial changes. SpongeBob’s strong attacks have received an appreciable overhaul, with his downstrong now featuring a more fitting animation. His light counterparts also underwent adjustments, such as his up and down light attacks. Additionally, Air’s strong attacks have become more creative, introducing new dynamics to aerial combat.
Notably, SpongeBob’s design is evolving to be more reminiscent of iconic Nintendo characters, which makes sense when you consider the player base of the genre. Further changes in mechanics, like movement, grabs, and shielding, bring the gameplay closer to the Smash series.
The Slime Meter
Nickelodeon Brawl 2 distinguishes itself by introducing a new gameplay element, the slime meter. In a first for platform fighters, this meter system adds depth to the combat. Slime specials offer a range of effects, enhancing moves and enabling new strategies. Slime Burst, for instance, expends two segments of the meter to break out of hits and push opponents away. This mechanic could prove invaluable in escaping oppressive combos. The sequel maintains the air dashes from the first game, allowing recovery from the ledge by spending meter. However, using the follow-ups to decrease knockback for setups may be a point of balance concern. Fully filling the meter unleashes a super attack, akin to final smashes in the Smash series, providing players with varied ways to express themselves.
However, there’s potential for over-centralization, as the first player to build up a meter might gain a significant advantage. This is the issue with meter mechanics in general. Let’s just hope the meta remains balanced and strategic in this regard.
New Stages
Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 is introducing a range of stage layouts. From chemistry equipment, doubling platforms, to hidden Sun Warrior City, the stages provide varied gameplay experiences. Some stages even feature multiple layouts, suggesting dynamic changes or different obstacles during matches.
Story Mode
One significant update is a single-player campaign in which you can control a variety of characters in an effort to stop Vlad Plasmias, the primary antagonist from Dany Phantom, from conquering the Nickelodeon universe. According to reports, this mode will also include some roguelike characteristics where losing a match in the story will reverse some progress but maintain other elements that can help make your subsequent runs easier. Characters are sent through star-shaped portals to other worlds, offering a unique respawn mechanic after losing a stock.
This story mode expands upon its predecessor, featuring roguelike elements where players progressively unlock characters and skills for more successful attempts. These changes promise greater variety and replayability, giving players something to do other than playing competitive 1v1.
Newcomers and Their Unique Movesets
One of the standout aspects of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 is the introduction of new characters, each bringing their own unique playstyles.
Squidward for instance showcases unconventional tilts and aerials, with a quirky mix of moves resembling a blend of Wii Fit Trainer and Game & Watch from the Smash series.
Jimmy Neutron on the other hand adds a defensive zoner playstyle to the mix. With his science lab arsenal, he can attack with laser projectiles, dive bomb foes, and utilize his truly robotic companion, Goddard.
Plankton and Dismac present a creatively diverse set of abilities, combining command grabs with ranged attacks. His slam cancels and various projectile-based moves contribute to his distinct gameplay style.
The quiet teases of characters like Casey Jones and Vlad Plasmius also raise anticipation for their potential inclusion in the game. As the roster expands, fans can look forward to experimenting with the unique mechanics and techniques each newcomer brings to the battlefield. And that’s all for this video. What do you guys think?
