Ghost of Yotei is more like a spiritual sequel to Ghost of Tsushima and also known as Ghost of Tsushima 2. The plot is based on historic Japan in 1603. It features an all new protagonist, named Atsu. It’s coming this year and before you jump straight to it, it’s better to know some mechanics and key points. If you remember these things, it’ll help you start better when playing Ghost of Yotei.

Let’s see what these important things are.

#1 It’s Set 300 Years After Ghost of Tsushima

The game is not a direct continuation of the first Ghost of Tsushima. It’s centuries later in the story. You’re Atsu (protagonist) who is a solitary ronin with a troubled history. Her foes, the Yotei Six, killed her kin and left her to die.

She now goes back to where she comes from to track them down. Though it expands on the Jin Sakai world, this tale is standalone. You do not have to play the first one. However, if you understand the whole story, it can benefit you in Ghost of Yotei.

#2 Atsu Is a Ghost on Her Own Terms

Atsu Is a Ghost on Her Own Terms

Atsu is no samurai like Jin. She’s a former outlaw turned assassin. Her quest for revenge comes from raw emotion and ruthless discipline.

She wears the Ghost mask as a badge. She employs it not for defending honor but for staying alive. The narrative ventures into more personal and vengeful ground. Atsu’s path is more gruesome and less chivalrous.

#3 You Can Hunt the Yotei Six in Any Order

Each of the six Yotei has their own paths. You don’t have to follow a preset route. If you want to finish off The Snake first and then The Dragon? You can do that in the game.

This open-ended mission design allows you to craft the order of your revenge. Each target has varying mechanics and environment. So, the exploration is more engaging now.

    #4 Gameplay Features

    Gameplay Features

The fighting in Ghost of Yotei builds upon the original game’s mechanics but introduces fresh tools. Atsu can dual wield. She also employs guns. Stealth and sword fighting is no longer the only thing. Firearms introduce strategic elements to battles.

Battles are more hazardous and flashy. And, you can use katana as well as middle-range guns. You also gain a wolf companion. It can help in combat or lead enemies. The Atsu-wolf relationship is central to both narrative and gameplay.

#5 More Open Exploration and Less Repetitive

More Open Exploration and Less Repetitive - Playing Ghost of Yotei

The developers aimed to address an open-world game common problem. And, that is repetition.

In Ghost of Yotei, you will not be repeating the same tasks repeatedly. There are bounty quests, sensei to practice with, and new characters who provide you with special quests. You have the ability to place campfires wherever you want and rest.

It’s more free-form than Tsushima. The world around Mount Yotei is hostile. But it’s beautiful. Snow-covered forests, deserted shrines, and isolated villages all lay in wait. There’s also the otherworldly aspect, ancient spirits and mythological creatures haunt this world.

#6 Trailer Shows Just Enough (More Is Coming)

There are two Ghost of Yotei trailers released so far. The first one showed off the setting, Ezo’s frosty wilderness and some glimpses of the Atsu.

The second one (recently released) focused on Atsu’s powers and combat flow. It shows that she is not only a skilled fighter but also has some kind of supernatural abilities. The game blends reality with myth in unexpected ways.

Ghost of Yōtei – Collector’s Edition Trailer

A deeper look at gameplay will be revealed in July. So far, the focus is on story and mood. Expect a grounded but magical experience, like what Sucker Punch nailed in Tsushima.

#7 It Launches October 2, 2025 (Multiple Editions)

    Playing Ghost of Yotei

The Ghost of Yotei release date on PS5 is October 2, 2025. And, it is exclusive to PS5. No PC version out yet, though, but you will get it later on. Pre-orders are already open on May 2. You can select between Standard, Digital Deluxe, and Collector’s Editions.

You’ll also get access to exclusive items like a new horse, charm, and maps. Pricing starts at $69.99 and goes up to $249.99 for the premium bundle.

Here’s what you get in the Collector’s Edition:

    • Ghost mask and sash
    • Sword kit and art cards
    • Digital Deluxe armor and dye
    • Bonus in-game mask and avatar set
    • No physical disc included

    Final Thoughts

Ghost of Yotei builds on what made Ghost of Tsushima a great game. It adds a new female protagonist and non-linear assassinations with supernatural elements and gunplay to it.

It’s designed for a different type of warrior. Playing Ghost of Yotei won’t be just about fighting. It will be about revenge and confronting ancient myths in a harsh world of Japan.
