Nightingale’s Developers: What studio is making the game?
The new game, Nightingale, is all thanks to a game development team called Inflexion Games. They got established 6 years ago in 2018 in Canada and have a staff of more than 100 people, who include many industry veterans.
Aaryn Flynn, the founder of Inflexion Games, brings a wealth of knowledge to the project, having spent 17 years at BioWare. He is renowned for creating beloved RPGs such as Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic. He spent the years 2009 till 2017 working at BioWare as their general manager.
What is Nightingale about?
Nightingale survival game unfolds as a fantasy narrative spanning interconnected realms, with humans originating from a Victorian-era Steampunk-esque realm characterized by top hats and flintlock firearms. The collapse of the arcane portal network unexpectedly strands players in the Fae Realms, a dangerous land teeming with formidable creatures.
The journey begins in response to a cataclysmic event called “the Pale,” which afflicted the humans’ home realm. Seeking refuge in Nightingale, a magical capital city historically associated with Fae magic, humans attempted to escape through the portal network. However, the network collapse scattered individuals across diverse realms within the Fae Realms.
The overarching goal for players is to reach Nightingale City. Yet, in the immediate term, survival becomes paramount, necessitating the construction of shelters, resource gathering, and typical activities found in survival crafting games. As players acquire the requisite materials and tools, they can gradually re-establish and utilize the portal network to navigate different realms. This dynamic feature ensures that Nightingale game offers a varied and ever-changing setting rather than being confined to a single fixed environment.
Nightingale’s Innovative Gameplay
The topic of our conversation, Nightingale, is going to be a first-person survival crafting game where players have to travel the realms using minimal resources. Perhaps the game’s best feature is its portal network that allows players to satisfy their craving for an adventure by letting them generate new realms and then go on to explore them. This involves using Realm Cards, providing a level of control over the characteristics of the generated domain.
Nightingale’s combat mechanics encompass melee and firearm elements, featuring visually appealing flintlock rifles, shotguns, and pistols that players can likely craft and utilize to confront the menacing fae creatures depicted in the trailers. The game introduces a formidable adversary known as the Bound, twisted Fae imitations of humanity, creating additional challenges during encounters.
Building plays a significant role in Nightingale’s gameplay. Players can designate a chosen realm as their “Respite Realm,” serving as the respawn point upon death and allowing the initiation of estate construction. The game incorporates a modular base-building system akin to other survival crafting RPGs like Grounded or Valheim. This system includes various components such as floors, walls, stairs, and more, enabling players to place and construct their bases according to their preferences strategically.
Is Nightingale Survival game out yet?
Inflexion Games has officially disclosed that Nightingale will be released on Thursday, February 22, 2024. The announcement was made during Gamescom 2023.
Originally slated for a 2022 release, the developers had initially announced a delay, attributing it to the decision to upgrade to Unreal Engine 5. Subsequently, Aaryn Flynn, CEO of Inflexion Games, communicated another delay and mentioned receiving substantial feedback from playtesters. The team aims to incorporate these insights by implementing changes. While they also expressed a desire to upgrade to Unreal Engine 5.2, the developer clarified that this wasn’t the primary reason for the extended development timeline.
What are Realm Cards in Nightingale?
Realm Cards are craftable items in Nightingale, allowing players to generate new realms through the portal network. When opening a portal to a new realm, a screen is accessed, enabling the placement of various Realm Cards that, when combined, determine the characteristics of the world on the other side of the portal.
Crafting Realm Cards involves using materials like paper, ink, and other resources. These are all the available Realm Cards:
- Biome Cards – These determine the overall biome itself (e.g., Swamp, Desert, Forest).
- Major Cards – They change the base realm significantly, such as increasing hostile creature spawns.
- Minor Cards – These make relatively minor differences to the realm, such as weather, time of day, season, etc.
When creating a realm, it is currently unknown if a Minor or Major card will be needed or not. However, a portal does require at least one Biome Card. Other than this, there are also four more slots available in the portal gun when creating a realm.
As we’ve mentioned before, exploring different dimensions is a major part of the Nightingale experience. This is all made possible with portals and the different Realm Cards that exist in the game. From vast deserts to primeval forests or treacherous swamps, the experience continually evolves.
Even though we don’t really know the exact number of dimensions or the size of individual biomes, we do know that it’s all made possible thanks to the Realm Cards. Players can easily customize the details of their next world using these cards, and the huge amount of possible card combinations means there is a large variety of dimensions for players to explore.
Even more importantly, the developers have said that there won’t be any microtransactions in this game. Meaning, the only way to get your hands on Realm Cards is through playing and exploring the game itself!
How much survival is there in Nightingale?
In Nightingale, you are constantly struggling for survival because you’ll be running into many different enemies when traveling the diverse biomes. Aaryn Flynn says that although he wants the game to have a survival format, he doesn’t want it to be overly frustrating.
We can assume that eating in this game will be a requirement to stay alive, but we can’t be sure if other gameplay elements like sleeping will also be in the game. It will also be interesting to see how the player will treat their wounds after getting injured in the various dimensions.
Crafting: What can you make?
In the crafting aspect of Nightingale survival game, it draws on familiar systems seen in other representative genres. Players have to create tools and weapons for themselves using the resources they find while exploring.
Moreover, the crafting system extends to constructing buildings and settlements, following a classic approach. If you want, you can put together doors, walls, and other structures to create something that looks similar to a house. Different structures can also be built using blueprints that will be unlocked throughout the game.
If you want to start building houses or putting together different structures, you will need to get your hands on essential resources that are available during exploration. These can be acquired by cutting trees, mining ore veins, collecting plants, etc.
How many players are in the Nightingale Survival game?
While Nightingale game places significant importance on its multiplayer option, Inflexion Games affirms that solo play is also possible. However, navigating the survival adventure alone will be more challenging, particularly when encountering formidable enemies in specific dimensions. Defeating these adversaries solo is theoretically possible but is a difficult task. So, if you are a one-man army who doesn’t like to play with others, you might want to prepare for a bit of a challenge.
The game allows players to form groups of up to 10 individuals per server to collaboratively embark on adventures across the Faewild and portal network. The game emphasizes a player-vs-environment (PvE) approach rather than a player-vs-player (PvP). This indicates a focus on cooperative play to conquer the challenges of the Faewild. In this multiplayer setting, players join forces to navigate and subdue the wild elements of the game.
Players can follow others into a new realm, even if they didn’t create it or cannot do so themselves. While co-op multiplayer is a prominent feature, participating in Nightingale Solo is a viable and unrestricted option for players.
