In 1992, the genre of survival horror received a monumental catalyst with the release of Alone in the Dark. This pioneering video game introduced players to the concept of scarcity in resources and the chilling adventure against overwhelming odds. Now, Peace is Interactive is taking the initiative to remake this classic, promising a star-studded rendition that aims to bring their time-tested horror formula back to prominence. The influence of the original Alone in the Dark on the gaming landscape is undeniable. After all, many of its pioneering features, like the fixed-camera perspective in a 3D space and the methodical investigation of mysteries, would later resurface in the Resident Evil series Resident Evil. One thing is for sure, in an era brimming with tons of remakes, this one stands out as a title to watch out for. So without further ado, here’s what we know about Alone in the Dark.
The announcement of Alone in the Dark came with a full-reveal trailer that sets a chilling tone. Just to recap, the trailer opens with a haunting rendition of the House of the Rising Sun as the little girl engages in unsettling actions, including hanging dolls in her room. There’s an eerie and mysterious atmosphere as characters talk about the area and its inhabitants.
A man, who appears to be a psychiatrist or doctor, inquires about the main character’s condition. The trailer also offers glimpses of various gameplay mechanics, all while a preacher delivers an impassioned speech. This trailer ends with a woman lounging with a cigarette, welcoming viewers to the madhouse. Also in a PlayStation blog post, we also got a deeper look at what Alone in the Dark has in store. Notably, the game’s narrative is in the capable hands of Michael Hanberg, known for his work on acclaimed titles like Soma and Amnesia: The Dark Descent. But that’s not all, the monster designs for the game comes from Guy Davis, a frequent collaborator of Guillermo del Toro. And if Guillermo del Toro is known for something, it’s his brilliant originality.
Now, let’s talk about the game itself. Alone in the Dark is described as a fusion of psychological horror and southern gothic, all set in the 1920s. In the original game, players will have the choice to step into the shoes of either Edward Carnby, the original series protagonist, or Emily Hartwood. Their mission? Unravel the mysteries concealed within the enigmatic Darcello Mansion Asylum and search for Emily’s missing uncle. While we don’t have many specific narrative details, the game promises to deliver a wholly original story, drawing inspiration from the original trilogy of games.
Here’s an interesting tidbit, a prologue chapter titled Grace in the Dark, featuring Grace from Alone in the Dark 2, was revealed initially as a Gamescom 2022 exclusive. It’s an intriguing blend of the familiar and the new. Speaking of Gamescom, the developers made it clear that Alone in the Dark is not exactly a reboot or a remake, but rather a reimagining. It’s a tribute to the original game, drawing inspiration from its elements, such as a piano and a character mentioned in a note. They’ve expanded on these aspects to create a fresh narrative within the Alone in the Dark universe. While certain characters are retained, it’s essentially a new story to explore. However, if it’s anything like the original, then the game should begin with either Carnby or Hartwood heading straight to the mansion in order to investigate, depending on who you select.
Finally, in addition to its puzzle elements, the game has also been revealed to be a third-person shooter unlike the original. While these segments in the trailer were brief, they appeared to showcase standard survival horror-style aiming and shooting. A moment of melee combat is also hinted at, although it’s probably not the best choice against the many monstrosities in the game. All in all, the reimagined Alone in the Dark promises a fresh take on the classic survival horror franchise
.
It embraces the essence of the original, while introducing new elements to captivate both old and new fans alike. With its emphasis on limited resources, dual protagonists, and an atmospheric manner setting, it’s truly shaping up to be a game that’s worth keeping an eye on. Whatever you do, just don’t play it Alone in the Dark.
