INTRODUCTION
The Legend of Zelda series is one of the most influential franchises in gaming history. Some of the most notable entries include The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest video games of all time, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which reinvented the franchise with its vast open world and innovative gameplay mechanics. Nintendo has been keeping a tight lid on the much-awaited sequel, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, leaving fans in a state of anticipation and curiosity. Although the game was announced back in 2019, Nintendo has only released a few short teasers, leaving fans in the dark on what to expect.
Breath of the Wild was easily one of the best games on the console. We can all agree that expectations are through the roof, and the reason is obvious. This is Zelda we’re talking about, after all. The developers have even promised to take the franchise to new heights – quite literally – as they introduce soaring adventures above the Hyrule skyline. New items and tools have already been confirmed, allowing you to explore and fight in ways you never thought possible. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild set the bar high, and it appears that the sequel is ready to improve on its already legendary foundation.
STORY
Nintendo has been rather tight-lipped regarding the subtitle–Tears of the Kingdom, as they are concerned that it might spoil the story. This decision has, of course, sparked endless speculation among fans, reaching to unravel potential clues underlying clues.
Based on the footage and trailers that have been released so far, it appears that the game’s story will center around the return of Ganon, the main antagonist of the Zelda franchise. The trailers suggest that his desiccated corpse has been resurrected from beneath Hyrule Castle, and the dark energy known as Malice is beginning to spread once again, threatening to engulf the land in chaos and destruction. The words tears in the subtitle has me wondering if this could be connected to Twilight Princess. As some of you are aware, tears in Twilight Princess refer to Tears of Light, which are fragments of light that were scattered across Hyrule. It’s impossible to tell where in the timeline Breath of the Wild lies, so this is within the realm of possibility.
GAMEPLAY
Gameplay is set to build upon the revolutionary open-world mechanics. The good news is that the developers have taken note of the overwhelmingly positive feedback they received for the traversal and combat systems in the original release, and have expanded upon these mechanics. In other words, a little more of the same. Why fix what isn’t broken, right? One of the most exciting new features in Tears of the Kingdom is the addition of aerial exploration.
The world of Hyrule has been expanded to include the skies, and players will be able to traverse this new realm with ease, using Link’s incredible acrobatic abilities to leap from dungeon to dungeon suspended high above the clouds. This added verticality promises to bring a new level of excitement and depth to the game, as players navigate the heights and depths of the world in Link’s brand new adventure.
FUSE
As the name suggests, the Fuse power allows Link to combine items to create unique tools and weapons. In a recent showcase, series producer Eiji Aonuma demonstrated the power of Fuse by taking on an enemy with a regular stick. As familiar players expected, the stick broke relatively quickly. What happened next was crazy, however, as Aonuma was able to salvage the stick by fusing it with a nearby rock to create a hammer-like weapon that was both stronger and more durable. This simple yet effective demonstration illustrates the seemingly endless possibilities offered by the Fuse power, allowing players to experiment and create their own unique weapons and items.
Other examples of the Fuse power showcased in the gameplay footage included fusing a mushroom to a shield to create a smoke bomb, and fusing an eyeball to an arrow to create a seeking projectile. These examples highlight the incredible versatility of the Fuse power, allowing players to be as creative and innovative as they wish in their item combinations. The Fuse power is a potentially gameplay-defining feature, allowing players to forge their own builds and unique playstyles.
ULTRAHAND
The next ability is Ultrahand, an ability that was greatly hinted at in previous trailers, which showed Link riding various flying vehicles. By fusing different pieces together, players can create their custom aircraft with unique capabilities. Aonuma demonstrated this by creating a raft using three logs, and then transforming it into a more advanced propelled boat by adding other pieces. Players will have the freedom to create anything they can come up with, limited only by the upgrades they have earned at that point in the game. Overall, the Ultrahand ability is a fun addition that adds a lot of spice to the gameplay. It seems customization is a huge aspect to Tears of the Kingdom. Even though it’s not common in the Zelda franchise, I think this is a really interesting ability and I look forward to witnessing the results.
The next ability is Ascend, which essentially gives Link a high jump. You can bet this power will take center-stage in the game’s world-building. Puzzles will be made with this mind, so be ready for that. On a slightly unrelated note, I can also see how Ascend may give rise to a number of interesting glitches on the game’s launch.
Lastly, we have the Recall ability. It’s a lot like the hourglass in Prince of Persia, though I doubt such an overpowered ability will have usage in combat.
SETTING
As for the game’s setting, Tears of the Kingdom will be set in the familiar landscape of Hyrule. Aonuma confirmed this, although he emphasized that the world had undergone significant changes. Perhaps the most noteworthy change is the addition of Sky Islands. These areas can include waterways, waterfalls, and points of interest. They are also home to various unique vegetation, shops, enemies, man-made structures, and settlements, which players can explore. Additionally, Sky Islands come in different sizes, ranging from single boulders to large landmasses. Sky Islands also appear to have different biomes, including temperate zones, snowy areas, and possibly others. These islands are also extremely likely to make a connection to the first game in the Zelda timeline: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which also featured Sky Islands.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is shaping up to be a worthy successor to Breath of the Wild, with its expanded open world, new powers and other gameplay mechanics, emphasis on verticality, and a whole new story to unravel. I’m also curious about Nintendo’s plans for the series. Will this be the end of this Link’s adventure, or do they have plans for a trilogy of Switch games? It’s also important to consider the Switch’s life cycle. A third installment would be a worthy send-off to one of the most successful consoles in history. What do you guys think?
