SpongeBob SquarePants first appeared on television on May 1, 1999 on Nickelodeon.
The series “SpongeBob SquarePants” (also known as “SpongeBob SquarePants”) was created by animator Stephen Hillenburg.
It soon became one of the most beloved animated series by children and not so much, becoming an icon of pop culture. It is one of the longest running cartoon series and throughout its history different video games have been released to accompany the growth and popularity of Bob and his friends from the underwater city of Bikini Bottom.
The most famous SpongeBob video games
SpongeBob SquarePants and the iconic characters of his cartoon could not be left out of the consoles of his fans. This is how in 2001 the first video game of the show was released and since then many others have been launched with the Bikini Bottom friends as protagonists. Most of them were made for different platforms, such as consoles, PC and even mobile devices. In this article we will make a summary of the most popular versions of SpongeBob for video games and tell you a little about each of them.
1- Legend of the Lost Spatula: is the first video game in the SpongeBob and friends series and was released on March 15, 2001 for the Game Boy Color console, developed by Vicarious Visions and published by THQ.
As the title anticipates, Bob has lost his golden spatula, and he must find it. To do so, he embarks on an adventure where he will visit the iconic places of the cartoon and Bikini Bottom: the Ananá, the Crustáceo Cascarudo, Roca Caliente, etcetera. During the game Bob will come across challenges, enemies and things he will have to do in order to advance towards his goal. Of course, the other characters of the series appear: Calamardo, Mr. Krabs, Arenita and Patricio.
It has 2D graphics and although simple, it was well received by cartoon lovers as they could satisfy their desire to wander through the scenery.
2- Battle for Bikini Bottom: this game came out in 2003 and is one of the most iconic video games of the sea sponge, which was released for PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube, among other consoles. Here you can choose between 3 characters: Bob, Patricio or Arenita, to walk around Bikini Bottom and fight against several robot enemies, since there is an invasion of them that wants to take over Bikini Bottom. In 2020 the video game, developed by Heavy Iron Studios and published by THQ, was re-released with better graphics in a version called “SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated”, which also included a PC version.
Each of the 3 characters has a different ability, and they must collect shiny coins called “shinies” to unlock new stages and boost their abilities.
3- The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie: King Neptune’s crown has been stolen and is in danger. Bob and his friend Patrick must do everything to save her in this spectacular game that was released along with the movie in 2004. The idea was to revive the film through the video game.
This is another video game developed by Heavy Iron Studios and published by THQ.
The game follows the sequence and scenarios that can be seen in the movie. During the different levels, players interact with other characters from the show, such as Squidward, Mr. Krabs and Sandy. In addition, to make the experience more interesting, there are mini-games and possibilities to increase your skills and attributes to overcome challenges. Another surprise is that there are “collectibles” that add to the game experience of the most fanatical fans of the cartoon.
4- SpongeBob SquarePants: Lights, Camera, Pants! This videogame came out in 2005 and is a game with many mini-games inside, to enjoy with family or friends (in the best “Mario Party” style). It was developed by THQ and was released for PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, Game Boy Advance and PC.
The different characters of the show are inside a tv show called “The Bigger, Better, Bestest Nicktoons Challenge”, so you have to choose a character and play.
Some of the mini-games available are: snail race, cake toss, driving test, a music and rhythm game, and so on. There are 30 mini-games: 24 divided into series of 3, each of which takes place in an area of Bikini Bottom (8 locations). The remaining 6 mini games must be unlocked. You can play up to 4 players (although you can choose from 6 characters), but in case you are alone, you can also play against the system.
If the player wins the minigame he/she advances in a story that is inside the game. Once you win in the Story Mode format, there is a 30′ movie available to watch.
It is a fun and competitive game that undoubtedly promises hours and hours of entertainment. And it is also a good option for those who do not want to get hooked for hours with an adventure game.
5- SpongeBob’s Truth or Square: released in 2009, this is another game developed by Heavy Iron Studios and published by THQ, and available for multiple platforms, including PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PSP, Wii and Nintendo DS.
The plot consists of helping SpongeBob to recover his memory and thus recover the super and valuable “KrabbyBurger” recipe that has disappeared when they were about to celebrate the 11 years of the Shelled Crustacean.
During the game, players will solve puzzles and visit the iconic Bikini Bottom locations where they will collect collectible “memories” in order to find the recipe for the prestigious burger. Thus, players relive moments from the most iconic episodes of the series, in a sort of flashback.
There is also a cooperative game mode where a second player can manage Patricio.
The best thing about this game is the fidelity it maintains with the cartoon as if it were just another episode and it is a great experience for fans who can participate by immersing themselves in Bikini Bottom.
6- SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake: is the latest video game of the beloved sea sponge and his companions. Developed by Purple Lamp Studios and published by THQ Nordic, it was released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Windows on January 31, 2023.
It is a 3D game, which turns the graphic part into a more than interesting attraction. Bob, throughout the game, will go through different thematic worlds: “worlds of desires” by the hand of a Patrick turned into nothing more and nothing less than “a balloon”. In each world Bob will learn combat skills and other things that will serve to advance in the game.
The plot is pretty weird, but what Bob chapter isn’t? Apparently Bob has spilled a liquid that has absorbed his friends and left them locked in each of these worlds. Well now, it’s time to rescue them.
So far, reviews on the reception of the game have been mixed.
What more could you ask of Bob
