Hey everyone. Among Nintendo’s slew of beloved exclusives, the Fire Emblem franchise has perhaps grown the most in recent years. This is not a surprise given the unique blend of gameplay elements Fire Emblem has to offer, combining excellent turn-based tactical gameplay with visual novel elements. Evidently. It has become one of Nintendo’s strongest staples. With each new iteration, the franchise continues to innovate, building upon the strong foundation that it has already established. Their upcoming game, Fire Emblem Engage, offers new features while maintaining the core mechanics that fans of the series have come to love. Fire Emblem Engage is just around the corner, so I thought it would be a good idea to cover Everything You Should Know About Fire Emblem Engage.
Story
Fire Emblem Engage takes place in the world of Elyos, a land consisting of four realms that united together in ancient times to defeat a devastating mythical beast, the Fell Dragon. To this end, they harnessed the power of Emblem Rings, powerful artifacts that allowed them to summon warriors from other worlds to aid in their battle. A millennia later, the Fell Dragon threatens to break free once more and it’s up to the main character, Alear, to rise to the occasion. Alear isn’t your typical Fire Emblem main character, as a 1000 year old Divine Dragon with the ability to use Emblem Rings.
As you are all aware, one of the core elements of the game is the ability to summon characters from past Fire Emblem titles, who can be fused with chosen Emblems to unleash powerful attacks in battle. The game’s objective is likely to be a quest to gather these Emblem Rings together to bring peace back to the realm and save the people of Elyos. It will be interesting to see how the story unfolds, banding together Fire Emblem’s most iconic heroes all in one setting.
The World of Elyos
Lythos
The central continent of Elyos is home to a sacred area known as Lythos, which is ruled by the powerful Divine Dragon King, Lumera. Divine Dragons like Alear are highly respected by nations that worship them, but are also feared by those who worship the fell dragon. Lythos is the home of those who serve the Divine Dragon, and it seems that many allies in the early game will come from this region.
Firene
The land of Firene, a prosperous and peaceful kingdom located in the southwest of Elyos, maintains cordial relations with the neighboring kingdoms of Brodia and Solm through a non-aggression pact. Firene’s inhabitants are devout worshippers of the Divine Dragon and will undoubtedly provide aid in your mission.
Solm
The sun-scorched deserts of the south-east is home to the nation of Solm. It is a land of open-minded people, valuing freedom above all else. Though they claim neutrality, Solm swears its allegiance to Alear.
Brodia
The warlike kingdom of Brodia, located northwest of Elyos, is devoted in serving the Divine Dragon and its people live off the riches they have gained through conquest. Brodia is always at odds with its neighbor, Elusia, who worship the fell dragon. Despite their penchant for violence, Brodia remains steadfast in its loyalty to Firene and Solm.
Elusia
The kingdom of Elusia, which holds sway over the icy expanse of the northeastern realm of Elyos, is shrouded in mystery. The people of Elusia worship the fell dragon and are in constant opposition to the other kingdoms of Elyos, standing as a hindrance to Alear’s quest. Their fervent devotion to the fell dragon makes them a formidable adversary in Fire Emblem Engage.
Characters from Lythos
There are a number of confirmed original characters in Fire Emblem Engage. Alear, of course, is the protagonist of Fire Emblem Engage.
Alear is charged with the special duty to protect Elyos from the powerful fell dragon. Though Alear possesses the power to summon powerful warriors to battle through the use of Emblem Rings, this task is made more perilous by the fact that Alear has no recollection of his or her life before the beginning of the game.
Lumera, a Divine Dragon from Lythos and mother of Alear, played a crucial role in sealing away the fell dragon 1000 years ago. Alear reuinites with Lumera after a long slumber only to discover that Elyos is under attack. Now, Alear supports Lumera in bringing peace to Elyos by retrieving the Emblem Rings and thwarting the Fell Dragon’s resurgence.
Vander is a distinguished guardian of the Divine Dragon in the Holy Land of Lythos, and has long been watching over Alear. He serves as an early-promoted Paladin unit, and is likely to be one of your best units early game. However, like similar units in previous games, his potential for growth may be limited.
Other guardians of the Divine Dragon include Clanne, a steward who is skilled in magic and has the power to pierce armor, even striking those who take shelter behind cover.
Framme, Clanne’s twin sister, also serves as a steward and is adept in both healing magic and hand to hand combat. She wields an ability called Chain Guard to shield her comrades from harm.
Characters from Firene
Alfred, a prince from the kingdom of Firene, is your typical lance cavalry unit. Since his youth, he has been a frequent visitor to Alear while the Divine Dragon slumbered, and has grown familiar with the town.
He often embarks on journeys accompanied by his two loyal retainers, Boucheron, who wields an axe, and Etie, who uses a bow.
Like Alfred, Celine is another noble, and she wields magic in battle.
A villager called Jean also joins the battle to improve his craft,
And finally, we have Louis, an armor-clad warrior who uses his high defense stat to stop physical attacks and protect allies, as well as Chloe, an experienced pegasus rider who strikes enemies from the skies.
Characters from Solm
Timerra, Fogado’s older sister and the Queendom of Solm’s successor, is a sentinel, skilled with a spear and can easily repel foes. Timmera enjoys singing and occasionally composes original songs to sing to her companions
.
Meanwhile, Fogado adopts an easygoing lifestyle, as he’s not in line for the throne. Atop his horse, he searches for people to rescue from danger along with his bow, and also uses the Sentinel class, despite being different from his sister.
Timerra’s retainers are Merrin, who wields knives, loves animals and rides a wolf to battle, along with Panette, a sword fighter with a strange obsession for oddities such as insects and ghosts.
Fogado’s retainers are Pandreo, a lively and devoted clergyman and brother of Panette, who possesses healing abilities with the High Priest class and Bunet, a Great Knight who also happens to be Fogado’s personal chef.
Finally, we have Seadall, a famous and enigmatic dancer who is also a skilled fortune teller.
Characters from Brodia
Diamant, the crown prince of the Kingdom of Brodia, is a heroic lord who wields a sword.
He is usually accompanied by his loyal retainers Amber, a lance wielding cavalry unit, and Jade an armored powerhouse.
Diamant has a younger brother, Alcryst, who has a calm temperament and prefers to use a bow.
His retainers are Lapis, a sword fighter and Citrinne, a mage.
Characters from Elusia
Ivy, the crowned princess of Elusia, is a natural leader with a royal aura. She can use powerful magic while riding on her wyvern in battle, striking fear in her opponents.
Her loyal bodyguards are Zelkov, a thief who uses poison daggers to guard Ivy in the shadows and Kagetsu, a swordmaster from a distant land who uses her skills to slice those who stand against Ivy.
Ivy’s younger sister is Hortensia, a Wing Tamer who rains down spells atop her pegasus. She has a playful and slightly selfish personality.
Rosado, a wyvern rider with a positive outlook on life, and Goldmary, a Hero class unit who appears shy but bravely defends Hortensia, serve as her bodyguards.
The Four Hounds
The main antagonists of Fire Emblem Engage are The Four Hounds, a group dedicated to resurrecting the Fell Dragon.
Its leader is Zephia, a demon dragon Manakete who rides atop a wyvern. Her nefarious companions are Griss, a violent mage with a rather wild personality, Mauvier, who’s known for being a righteous knight, despite his affiliations, and Marni, a small yet deadly armored knight.
Other Characters
Other characters include the recurring merchant Anna, Yunaka, a mysterious thief with a cheerful personality, and Veyle, a mage who appears when Alear is attacked by enemies. Not much is known about her, though she appears to be searching for someone. Last but not least is a dog-like animal called Sommie. Players can pet, feed, and even change its clothes!
Gameplay
Regarding gameplay, Fire Emblem engage uses the traditional grid-based combat the series is known for. You’ll be fighting alongside allies recruited in your journey, but this time, you will have the new and powerful ability of Engage, which summons warriors from previous games using the Emblem Ring. Now, players can summon the likes of Lucina, Sigurd and Ephraim in battle.
Skills and abilities
With Engage, players will be able to merge with summoned heroes and gain access to their weapons, skills, and unique abilities. Emblem Rings are not unit locked, and so your units can equip any ring in their possession. The weapon triangle mechanic is back, of course, but abilities called Arts will have an advantage over bows, daggers and tomes.
A new mechanic, known as Break, which allows you to effectively stun opponents when fighting against a particular weapon type will also be introduced. Engage’s equivalent to Mila’s Turnwheel and Divine Pulse is the Draconic Time Crystal, allowing you to rewind turns and undo combat actions.
Also, you can now walk around after completing a battle, pick up items that fell on the ground and talk with your allies to collect Friendship Fragments, which I assume are used to increase your Support rank.
The base of operations is Somniel, a floating island of the Holy Land of Lythos. It serves the same function as My Castle from Fire Emblem Fates and the Garreg Mach Monastery of Fire Emblem Three Houses. This is where Sommie resides, and like previous games, gives players plenty of activities between battles, which include customizing playable characters, fishing and eating. The skinship mechanic also makes its return in the form of polishing Emblem Rings.
Bond Rings
Your unit’s stats can be improved through the use of Bond Rings, which provide stat boosts when equipped. Bond Rings are named after the characters from the worlds of Engage characters. These rings are graded on a scale from C to S, with C being the lowest grade and only providing a small boost to one stat, while B and higher grades provide multiple stat improvements.
All in all, Fire Emblem Engage is just like other main titles, although it offers interesting new elements of strategy in its Engage function, Arts and Break status effect.
The confirmed Engage characters are Marth, Celica, Sigurd, Roy, Eliwood, Lyn, Eirika, Ephraim, Ike, Micaiah, Lucina, Corrin, and Byleth. Tiki, Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude, will be available as DLC.
And this is everything you need to know about Fire Emblem Engage! I’m very excited for Engage, personally, as a fan of the franchise. I think some of the new mechanics are really cool, especially its namesake, the Engage feature. Hopefully, the story turns out to be on the level that brought Fire Emblem Three Houses critical acclaim. Thanks for reading, everyone!
