One of the most memorable challenges in Oblivion Remastered is the Wisdom of Ages that sends you into Fort Bulwark to claim the Shield of the Crusader. It may sound easy but it’s not that simple. In this challenge, you are going to face three puzzles of different difficulties. Puzzles in Wisdom of Ages will test how you focus and observe the game.
If you don’t know how to complete this challenge, nothing to worry about. We are going to share step-by-step process all the way to the end. We will share tips on how to start and how you can solve the final chest puzzle of the Wisdom of Ages Oblivion Remastered.
Starting of Wisdom of the Ages (Important)
You can’t just jump into this quest because you need to complete the Pilgrimage and Shrine of the Crusader quests first.
Complete these, then start Priory of the Nine. Halfway through, you’ll fight Sir Henrick. Once you defeat him, he will tell you where the Shield is located within Fort Bulwark.
Fort Bulwark is found in the southeast corner of Cyrodiil, in the Blackwood region. It’s always better to mark it on your map through the quest menu. Once done, you’re ready to set off.
You can also expect related dialogue and encounters because the quest runs alongside Priory of the Nine.
Trouble Starts As You Enter Fort Bulwark
The trouble starts right from the beginning as soon as you step inside. You are going to face conjurers that are patrolling the halls as well as traps that are going to slow you down.
There, you need to move carefully because arrow traps are hidden in walls. Also, wooden doors often lead to dead ends. You should stick to main stone corridors when possible.
Your first target is the chamber with two giant flames. This room connects to several key paths for Wisdom of the Ages.
You need to clear the enemies, and take note of the handles that control the nearby gates and drawbridge.
Tile Order Puzzle (Puzzle 1)
This is the first real test in Wisdom of Ages. You’ll find a room with a 3×4 tile grid. Each row has three tiles, but you can only step on one per row without resetting the puzzle.
Follow the below sequence exactly, and the gate ahead will open.
Note: A single misstep will reset the pattern. And you are going to start again.
The correct sequence is:
- First row: Left tile
- Second row: Middle tile
- Third row: Right tile
- Fourth row: Left tile

Sir Therdret Appearance
Right after the tile puzzle, you’ll hear someone calling out. This is Sir Therdret who was locked in a cell nearby. You can free him or let him be as this is optional, but it’s worth it for the lore and companionship. The handle to release him is just outside the cell.
Once freed, you need to continue along the winding halls. You’ll soon reach the second puzzle room.
Statue Puzzle (Puzzle 2)
The statue puzzle is simpler but easy to overlook if you’re rushing. Four statues stand in the room, each facing away from the center. At the base of each statue is a crank.
In this puzzle, your goal is to turn every statue so it faces inward, looking at the central icon in the middle of the room. Turn each one carefully.
The room contains two Conjurers, so deal with them first to avoid interruptions.
Once all four statues face the center, the flames in the room will extinguish, and the back door will open. This leads you toward the last and trickiest challenge in Wisdom of the Ages, the Rodgar’s Chests Puzzle.
Rodgar’s Chests Puzzle (Puzzle 3)
This is the most time-consuming part of the quest and most players find it hard as well in Oblivion Remastered. The room is quiet, but the challenge lies in matching items to the correct chests.
In the center, you’ll see a gold chest and a panel on the floor. Around the room are eight ordinary chests.
When you step on the panel, one of the ordinary chests will glow and display an icon related to an item.
Your task:
- Take the matching item from the gold chest.
- Place it into the glowing chest.
- Repeat until all eight are correctly matched.
For example, if the glowing chest shows a skull icon, you need to place Rodgar’s Skull inside. You’ll know you’re correct when the area shakes and your controller vibrates.

Chest Matching Order
Here’s the correct clockwise order starting with your back to the golden chest:
(Once all eight items of the following are placed in the right chests, the flames will disappear. The final door will open.)

- Rodgar’s Helm
- Rodgar’s Goblet
- Rodgar’s Sword
- Rodgar’s Book
- Rodgar’s Hammer
- Rodgar’s Skull
- Rodgar’s Gem
Claim Shield of the Crusader
Beyond the final door lies the Shield of the Crusader. This is the reward for completing Wisdom of the Ages.
You’ll also find useful items such as:
- Potions of Insight
- Potions of Sorcery
- Scrolls for restoring Intelligence and Willpower
What You Should Not Do
Even though the puzzles are straightforward when you know the solutions but there are simple mistakes that most players do:
- Tile puzzle resets – Rushing causes missteps. Walk slowly and confirm each tile.
- Ignoring Sir Therdret – While optional, freeing him adds extra immersion.
- Wrong chest placement – Double-check the icon before placing the item.
Wisdom of the Ages Challenge
Most Oblivion Remastered quests lean on combat or exploration. Wisdom of the Ages focuses instead on problem-solving.
The setting inside Fort Bulwark is also a highlight. The mix of traps, enemy encounters, and puzzle rooms gives the dungeon a distinct rhythm. You’re never doing the same thing for too long.

Additional Tips To Make It Easy
- It’s better if you stock up on healing items before entering. The traps and enemies during the challenge can wear you down.

- You should not skip looting because Fort Bulwark contains valuable potions and scrolls.
- It’s recommended to use the map marker for quick navigation back if you need to leave.
